The thought of an eight-team College Football Playoff has picked up plenty of steam over the last two weeks.
Following one of the most debatable selections in the abbreviated history of the system, the barking for playoff expansion has been blasted over a loud speaker. Not only are more fans and media calling for a larger bracket, but guys like Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez and Big XII commissioner Bob Bowlsby are also arguing for an expanded field.
On Thursday, SEC Network host Paul Finebaum joined ESPN’s Outside the Lines to talk about the potential of the College Football Playoff field expanding. And he believes the time is coming.
“I think we are closing in on that,” Finebaum said of potential expansion. “I understand what [SEC] commissioner [Greg] Sankey said, that all these commissioners have very valuable conference championship weekends, but change is needed.”
Finebaum also said that the expanded playoff format would give Ohio State, Georgia and UCF — all of which were worthy of consideration — a chance to prove they belong.
The conversation is picking up steam. And more and more people are starting to believe we’ll see eight teams sooner rather than later.
