Wisconsin chancellor Rebecca Blank is not a fan of what Michigan and Ohio State are doing.

She told USA Today in an interview for a story on coaching salaries that she believes the two schools are overpaying for their respective head coaches.

According to the story, Blank said “that really begins to threaten the whole sense that we are not professional athletic teams. I’m not terribly happy about the fact that they made those choices. That’s my opinion.”

Michigan made Jim Harbaugh the second-highest paid coach in the country when they gave him a contract worth $7 million (including his $2 million signing bonus) to lead the Wolverines.

Ohio State coach Urban Meyer is making $5.86 million per season, which puts him at third among all FBS coaches. Alabama coach Nick Saban is the only coach earning more annually than Harbaugh and Meyer.

Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst is in his first year in Madison and makes $2.3 million annually, which puts him at 46th in the country and ninth in the B1G behind Minnesota’s Jerry Kill and Northwestern’s Pat Fitzgerald.

Wisconsin athletics director Barry Alvarez said he doesn’t mind that the Badgers aren’t in the same price range as Michigan and Ohio State. He told USA Today that he understands the revenue factors that are taken into account with those kind of salaries.

But Blank, who makes just under $500,000 per year, made light of the fact that her salary for her high-ranking position is still significantly less than the new standard in revenue-based Division I sports.

“Well, clearly the market for football and basketball coaches is a whole lot tighter than the market for chancellors and presidents,” she said.

It’s worth noting that the Badgers are expected to sign a new 10-year deal with Under Armour on Friday. The reported deal is set to pay the athletic department an additional $4 million annually.
