Scoring a touchdown in a bowl game isn’t usually worthy of a ton of praise. But for one FIU running back, it’s an incredible accomplishment.
On Friday, FIU battled Toledo in the Bahamas Bowl as the college football postseason is in full swing. In the second quarter of the game, Panthers running back Anthony Jones scored a touchdown on a 6-yard run, the first points of the game for FIU.
The touchdown comes less than four months after being struck by a bullet in a drive-by shooting on Sept. 6. Jones was shot in the back and the face and underwent surgery.

FIU RB Anthony Jones scores a TD.
Why is that significant? He got shot in the face in a drive-by shooting in September. Incredible to think he’s scoring a touchdown in a bowl game less than four months later.

Jones played in the season opener for FIU, rushing for 88 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries against Indiana. He missed the next seven games of the season after the shooting.
Remarkably, Jones returned to the field in early November and played in the final four games of the year. He totaled 246 yards and three touchdowns on the season.
What an incredible story — and moment — for Jones and FIU.
