Former Central Michigan head coach John Bonamego has joined Michigan’s staff as a bowl game consultant.
According to Nick Baumgardner of the Detroit Free Press, Bonamego will assist the Wolverines in their Peach Bowl preparations for Florida on Dec. 29. The former Central Michigan head coach is working as a consultant. There was no indication he would be a member of Michigan’s staff past the bowl game.
Bonamego served as the head coach at Central Michigan for the last four seasons. He was fired following the Chippewas’ 1-11 year in 2018.
Per Michigan spokesman:
Former Central Michigan coach John Bonamego is working with Michigan as a "consultant" at the Peach Bowl.
For the bowl game. Nothing confirmed beyond that.

In four seasons with the Chippewas, Bonamego posted a 22-29 record, leading CMU to three bowl appearances. 2018 marked the first time his team didn’t reach bowl eligibility.
Following his termination, Central Michigan named former Florida head coach and Michigan wide receivers coach Jim McElwain as the new leader of the program. He led the Gators to two straight SEC East Division titles before being fired midway through his third season.
Michigan hasn’t had much trouble with Florida in the past, owning a 4-0 all-time record against the Gators. This year’s Peach Bowl will mark the third time in four seasons the two teams have gone head to head.
