It wasn’t long after Tyler Trent was sitting in the press box at Ross-Ade Stadium watching Purdue clobber Ohio State that ESPN personality Scott Van Pelt reached out to the super-fan and requested he co-host an episode of SportsCenter.

Trent’s story had recently been aired on College GameDay. His courageous fight with cancer and his upbeat, positive attitude inspired a nation. And there he was, co-hosting SportsCenter with Van Pelt.

During that edition of SportsCenter, Van Pelt promised Trent he would keep a seat open on set for Trent, and it was his anytime he wanted to make the trip to Bristol to co-host another show.

Trent was never able to make the trip. On New Year’s Day, after a long, courageous battle with bone cancer, Trent passed away. He was just 20.

Van Pelt kept his promise, though. He kept a seat open on the SportsCenter set. And on Tuesday night, he delivered the perfect farewell to the individual who touched so many lives.
