Report: Tennessee assistant turns down offer to become Maryland DC

Mike Locksley is still trying to find a defensive coordinator.
FootballScoop reported that Locksley had made an offer to Tennessee assistant coach Charles Kelly to become the Terrapins’ defensive coordinator ahead of the 2019 season. That opportunity was declined, though, according to the latest from FootballScoop.
Kelly is planning to stick with the Volunteers, passing on the opportunity to return as a defensive coordinator in college football. Last season, he served as the special teams coordinator and safeties coach for Tennessee.
Prior to Tennessee, Kelly spent four seasons as the defensive coordinator at Florida State under Jimbo Fisher.
Maryland was expecting Kelly to accept the job on Wednesday and was even anticipating a potential deal getting done in the evening. Instead, Locksley’s search to assemble a staff continues.
On Wednesday, Maryland did fill its offensive coordinator vacancy, as former East Carolina head coach Scottie Montgomery accepted the position.
