The depth along Iowa’s defensive line for the 2019 season has taken a hit.

During a season wrap-up press conference on Thursday, Hawkeyes head coach Kirk Ferentz announced that defensive lineman Jack Kallenberger will no longer be with the team, making the decision to step away from football. He informed coaches of his decision earlier this week.

Kallenberger is no longer listed on the roster on the team’s website.

The announcement was a bit of a surprise, as Kallenberger was expected to compete for a more significant role along the defensive line next fall.

Kallenberger transferred to Iowa in 2017 after two seasons at Iowa Central Community College. His younger brother, Mark Kallenberger is still a member of the team.

Iowa finished the 2018 season 9-4, including a win over Mississippi State in the Outback Bowl.
