Now that he’s the offensive coordinator at Michigan, Josh Gattis is doing his research and trying his best lure some of the top prospects to joining his unit in Ann Arbor. Unfortunately, one of those attempts didn’t go over too well.

Gattis tweeted out a graphic claiming Michigan was “Tight End U” for the amount of production Wolverine tight ends have enjoyed the last three seasons. Over that stretch, Michigan tight ends have totaled 167 receptions for 2,157 yards. Certainly, Jake Butt, Zach Gentry, Sean McKeon and Nick Eubanks have enjoyed some good seasons.

But Iowa assistant coach Kelvin Bell was quick to put down the notion that Michigan was “Tight End U.”

In a tweet of his own, Bell showed just how productive Iowa tight ends have been over the last three seasons — primarily George Kittle, Noah Fant and T.J. Hockenson. Over the last three seasons, Iowa tight ends have totaled 178 catches for 2,559 yards and 32 touchdowns.

Both teams have one Mackey Award winner, too. Butt claimed the award in 2016 and Hockenson was the 2018 recipient.

So, while Michigan’s tight ends have certainly enjoyed some impressive years over the last three seasons, the numbers don’t quite match Iowa’s, and the Hawkeye assistant was there to slam the door on the notion that the Wolverines could also be considered “Tight End U.”

Iowa and Michigan go head to head in Ann Arbor on Saturday, Oct. 5 in 2019. This little exchange might at a little fuel to that matchup.
