NCAA slams DII Saginaw Valley State with 137 eligibility infractions

The NCAA has come down hard on Division II Saginaw Valley State University, after it was ruled that the school committed over 100 eligibility infractions in 15 sports.

According to the Detroit Free Press, Saginaw Valley State is surrendering wins in 15 sports, will go on a four-year probation and pay a $5,000 fine after self-reporting 130 instances of playing ineligible players over a span of five years. The school recognized a lack of institutional control of its athletics department from 2013-14 through 2016-17.

In total, there were 137 violations of amateurism and eligibility certification. One football player also participated in games after his eligibility had expired.

Here’s a list of the penalties Saginaw Valley State faces, per the Detroit Free Press:

• Four years of probation from Feb. 7, 2019, through Feb. 6, 2023. SVSU had self-proposed a three-year probationary period, but the COI extended it one year.
• Vacation of all regular season, conference tournament and NCAA postseason records involving any athlete who competed from the time they became ineligible through the time they were reinstated.” Head-coaching records also will be vacated for instances when infractions occurred.
• SVSU will be ineligible to host NCAA championship competition in any sport during the 2019 spring semester.
• SVSU self-imposed an independent audit of its compliance operations in 2018-19. It will undergo a second audit in 2022-23.
