Urban Meyer has been in his new position for less than two months, but already Ohio State Athletic Director Gene Smith is seeing the value the former head coach brings to the department.
Meyer, who is now an assistant athletic director at Ohio State, retired as the head coach of the Buckeyes earlier than Smith had expected. But it was always the intent of the university to offer him the opportunity to stay on board in some capacity, whenever he did decide to step down.
According to Smith, Meyer is still in the learning process but has done a great job in the new position.
“He’s relaxed, he’s more comfortable, he’s learning a lot,” Smith told Eleven Warriors. “His eyes are wide open to this side of the house, administrative side. He’s really, really embraced all of our other sports.”
Meyer’s responsibilities include meeting with head coaches and student-athletes from other teams, helping in development initiatives. He’s also helping with fundraising for the Buckeyes.
“He’s bringing unbelievable value and helping develop leadership with our teams,” Smith said. “As time goes on, he’ll spend more time with our coaches to help our coaches continue to grow and learn.”
Meyer added incredible value on the field and seems to be continuing to add value as an administrator.
