Michigan defensive lineman Rashan Gary is considered to be one of the top prospects available in the 2019 NFL Draft. He’s consistently been mentioned as a top 10 selection and is considered a “freak” athlete.
But Pro Football Focus has a slightly different outlook for Gary. The site has the former Wolverine slated as the No. 44 player available headed into the draft.
That’s unbelievably low. And here’s the reasoning for that low mark from Pro Football Focus:
Gary’s production has yet to catch up to his freakish athleticism. He earned a 68.3 pass-rushing grade this past season.
Granted, Gary’s numbers don’t quite suggest that he’s one of the top 10 players in the draft, but he’s frequently been the focal point for several opposing offensive lines. He constantly drew double teams and was taken out of several plays be design.
His freakish athleticism and upside should be enough to counter the somewhat low college numbers.
Last season, Gary played in nine games at Michigan, missing three to injury and skipping the Peach Bowl. He totaled 44 tackles, including 7.5 for loss and 3.5 sacks. He served as an anchor along one of the toughest defensive lines in the country last fall.
Pro Football Focus makes a legitimate argument regarding Gary’s numbers. But it isn’t always the statistics that tell the whole story. There won’t be a lot of teams that pass on the opportunity to draft the former Michigan star.
