Penn State’s Connor McGovern explains why experience at multiple OL positions is beneficial

One of the things that scouts are looking for during the NFL Combine is versatility. While it’s always great to see players dominate a certain position, having the ability to step into a different role seamlessly is a huge positive.
Former Penn State offensive lineman Connor McGovern believes he’s got the versatility and experience that scouts are looking for over the next several days in Indianapolis. Having played multiple positions — primarily guard and center — is an advantage heading into the draft.
“I think my height, my athleticism, my length helps me a lot,” McGovern said in NFL Combine interviews. “I’ve prepared my whole life playing both positions (center and guard). And when I first got to Penn State they moved me to tackle, so I had all five positions down. So, when I played center, it made things a lot easier because I knew what everyone was doing.”
McGovern started in 34 career games with Penn State in his three seasons. In 2017, he started all 13 games at center. Last fall, he started 11 games at guard and one game at center.
That versatility and knowledge of all five positions along the offensive line will certainly be attractive to a lot of scouts. His stature, 6-foot-5, 325 pounds, is another huge bonus for the former Nittany Lion.
McGovern earned third-team All-B1G honors from both the coaches and the media following the 2018 season.
