The very strange and unpredictable Indiana basketball season continued on Saturday, as the Hoosiers defeated No. 6 Michigan State in Assembly Hall.
Justin Smith scored 24 points and Juwan Morgan had 11 rebounds as IU posted a thrilling 63-62 upset victory over the Spartans. Indiana swept the season series against Michigan State, winning in the Breslin Center in early February in overtime.
Indiana trailed by 12 points at one point in the contest, and Michigan State appeared to be on track to maintain its spot atop the conference standings. But the Hoosiers made some key plays late in the game, including an old-fashioned three-point play from Morgan with less than two minutes to play. It ended up being the winning basket.

Saturday’s win keeps the Hoosiers alive in the NCAA Tournament conversation, despite a subpar 15-14 record overall. Indiana now has two wins over Michigan State, along with victories over Wisconsin, Marquette and Louisville.
The Hoosiers are now 6-12 in the B1G. It’s the second-straight victory over a ranked opponent for IU, which also defeated No. 19 Wisconsin in double overtime earlier this week.
Michigan State dropped to 14-4 in B1G play and is now tied with Michigan in the standings. If Purdue defeats Ohio State, the Boilers will own the No. 1 spot in the standings.
