Matt Painter has harped on it ever since Purdue made the trip to Bloomington. Now, the Boilermakers head coach has addressed it to the Paint Crew — Purdue’s student section — directly.

“We have to get rid of the ‘IU Sucks’ chant,” Painter said following Purdue’s blowout victory over Ohio State. He used the Senior Day platform at Mackey Arena to send that message to the fans.

Purdue’s chant has been under scrutiny for several years now, but it’s gained more attention since Indiana fans chanted “F— you, Haarms” to Boilermaker center Matt Haarms during Purdue’s trip to Indiana in February. While Painter said what happened to Haarms “wasn’t right,” he also said that Purdue has to “clean up its own backyard.”

Here’s Painter addressing the crowd following the Boilers win on Saturday:

The Boilermakers had reason to thank Indiana on Saturday, as the Hoosiers knocked off Michigan State in Bloomington. IU’s victory, along with Purdue’s win, put the Boilers all alone in first place in the B1G with just two games left.

Purdue travels to Minnesota on Tuesday and closes out the year at Northwestern on Saturday.

There are no more home games for Purdue this season, so we won’t know if Painter’s message gets through to the students until next season.
