CBS’s decision to return to simplicity seemed to work for the network.

After experimenting with a few different ways to host the annual March Madness Selection Show over the last few years, the network decided to return to its old format. That is, teams and matchups were revealed one region at a time, with no other gimmicks.

That simplicity paid off, as the Selection Show saw its best rating in five years, according to a tweet from March Madness TV. According to the tweet, the show earned a 4.0/9 ratings/share in metered markets.

Change isn’t always a bad thing, but when it comes to the Selection Show, people have a certain expectation. And when CBS tinkered with that process, folks weren’t tuning in with the same delight as they had before.

Based on this year’s television ratings, it’s probably a good idea to stick with the old-fashioned Selection Show. It seems to be the best way to get people to stay tuned-in on Sunday evening.
