Greg Mattison might’ve spent 13 years of his coaching career at Michigan, but now that he’s draped in scarlet and grey, the defensive coordinator is all in on Ohio State.
Following the 2018 season, Mattison joined Day’s staff at Ohio State for the opportunity to share defensive coordinator responsibilities. He wanted the opportunity to sit in that position again, and wouldn’t get that chance in Ann Arbor with Don Brown running the show.
While there are no hard feelings for Mattison toward the Wolverines, he did use a term that will ruffle some feathers in Ann Arbor. During a press conference on Friday, he referred to Michigan as the “team up north.”
Surely that will go over well.
Mattison was asked about the transition from Michigan to Ohio State and whether there have been any moments in which he had to remember he was in Columbus and not Ann Arbor.
“No there haven’t been,” Mattison said. “And obviously, spending 13 years up north and I’ve got great people up there. I’m not going to say anything about that.”
Mattison spent the last eight seasons on Michigan’s staff, under head coaches Brady Hoke and Jim Harbaugh. From 2011-13 he was the defensive coordinator before taking over defensive line responsibilities in 2015.
He also had a prior stint in Ann Arbor from 1992-96.
While Mattison spent over a decade in Ann Arbor, he’s truly adopted the Ohio State mindset. And his new attitude probably won’t go over too well with his former players and colleagues at Michigan.
