Ohio State’s quarterback situation could be taking another hit.

Thursday afternoon, Letterman Row reported that Matthew Baldwin has entered his name in the NCAA transfer database, allowing him to explore other options outside of Columbus. He could still return to Ohio State, if that’s in his best interest.

Baldwin was competing with Justin Fields for the starting quarterback position. Fields was expected to win the job with Baldwin being the backup, but Ryan Day had not made a depth chart decision following the spring season.

If Baldwin does in fact decide to leave Columbus, the Buckeyes will have just two scholarship quarterbacks on the roster — Fields and former West Virginia quarterback Chris Chugunov. Baldwin was at Ohio State for just one year.

Ohio State already suffered one significant loss at quarterback this offseason, as Tate Martell decided to leave following Fields’ arrival. Martell transferred to Miami, where he’ll be immediately eligible for the 2019 season.

There was no potential landing spots mentioned for Baldwin.
