Nebraska is set at quarterback for at least the next two seasons. Adrian Martinez earned the starting job as a true freshman and is already one of the headlining players of the 2019 college football.

While the next two-to-three years seems like a long time, head coach Scott Frost knows that Martinez’s career will be gone quicker than a hiccup. That’s why he’s putting an emphasis on getting talent around his talented quarterback, and doing it quickly.

Frost talked about surrounding Martinez with talent in an interview with ESPN 590 AM, and doing it as early in his career as possible.

“We feel like we’ve got a really good quarterback and we’re in a hurry to surround him with the type of weapons that we need in order to have a really good offense,” Frost said. “You’re kind of on a clock with that. We feel really good about young quarterbacks, but while we’ve got a guy like Adrian, we want to surround him with as many good weapons as we can and guys that can change games.”

Nebraska has some weapons returning to the field in 2019, particularly receiver JD Spielman who had 818 yards and eight touchdowns on 66 receptions last season. And Frost has a really talented all-purpose back in Wandale Robinson — a four-star product who participate in spring practice for the Huskers.

There’s an expectation for Nebraska’s offense to pick up steam this season after finishing last fall on a high note. Martinez and the offense looked good in the spring game with limited reps, and that was without Robinson on the field.

While Frost understands there are some growing pains early in the process of rebuilding a program, he understands the window on Martinez is limited. His urgency to get playmakers to Lincoln shows he’s wanting to find immediate success.
