Former Spartan Justin Layne explains emotions after being drafted by Steelers

It’s always difficult for players to put their emotions into words when they receive that phone call from an NFL team and learn that they’re going to be drafted. But former Michigan State defensive back Justin Layne did his best to do so.

Layne was selected in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft, selected with the No. 83 pick by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Though some believed he would go higher, hearing his name called on Day 2 of the draft was still a dream come true.

“My emotions were everywhere, especially the wait, that whole process,” Layne said in an interview. “But I already knew I was coming here. I just had a feeling. Even when I was here — the whole pre-draft process. And then when I came for my top 30 visit, I just kinda got the feeling.”

Layne totaled 72 tackles and broke up 15 passes in his final season with Michigan State, also registering one interception. his size and athleticism made him an attractive pick and he fits the persona of the Pittsburgh defense.

Pittsburgh was a popular destination for B1G players, as Layne will be joining former Michigan linebacker Devin Bush and tight end Zach Gentry. He’ll be working to carve out a role in the Steelers defense early in his career.
