Michigan visits South African prison where Nelson Mandela spent 18 years

A few years ago, when Jim Harbaugh decided to take Michigan’s football team on an international trip, he justified the experience by saying “not all learning is done in the classroom.” This week, as the Wolverines are spending time in South Africa, that phrase could not be more true.
This week, Michigan visited Robben Island, where President Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years in prison. The team made the trip on Sunday and posted about the experience in a short video on Twitter:

Visiting the prison was part of Michigan’s itinerary while visiting Cape Town in South Africa. The team also finished the day with rugby.
This year marks the third straight spring that Michigan’s football team has made a trip overseas. The Wolverines have made previous visits to Italy and France. Harbaugh has said that Greece, Spain and Cuba could be possible destinations in the future.
