A former Ohio State assistant and longtime college football coach George Chaump has died at the age of 83, according to a report from PennLive.com. A cause of death was not immediately known.

Chaump was a native of Scranton, Pennsylvania and spent 11 seasons at Ohio State as an assistant coach under Woody Hayes. He was on the staff from 1968-1978 and was considered one of the top assistants with the program.

After a decade with the Buckeyes, Chaump jumped to the NFL where he served as an assistant coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was in that position from 1979-1981. Following that three-year stretch, he took his first college coaching job at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. In four years at IUP, Chaump’s teams were 24-16-1.

Chaump then took a leap to Marshall, where he was the head coach from 1986-1989. In four years with the program, Chaump guided the Thundering Herd to a 33-16-1 record. His best seasons came in 1987 and 1988, leading Marshall to back-to-back playoff appearances at the NCAA Division I-AA level. The Thundering Herd were 10-5 in 1987 followed by an 11-2 mark the next year.

With a tremendous amount of success at Marshall, Chaump was then named the head coach at Navy. He coached the Midshipmen from 1990-1994 and compiled a 14-41 record in five years.

In 13 years of coaching, Chaump was 71-73-2.
