Maryland officials are working on the final change that was recommended to be made following the death of Jordan McNair that occurred a year ago, according to a report from ESPN.

Heather Dinich of ESPN reported that the university is transitioning the athletic trainers from the athletic department to an independent unit in the campus health center. It is one of 20 recommendations that was made following an external investigation after McNair’s death.

“This has been a year of reflection for our department as we remember Jordan McNair,” athletic director Damon Evans told ESPN. “We’ve also been focused on implementing all of the recommendations from the external review and taking further steps to safeguard the health and well-being of our student-athletes, which has always been a primary focus for us.”

The school is also searching for a head team physician who will oversee all of Maryland athletics.

McNair died after suffering from a heatstroke during an organized team workout in 2018. He was taken to the hospital, but the lack of care available at the University of Maryland at the time caused several complications.

Along with the transition of athletic trainers, Maryland has also made cold water immersion available at all practices and having emergency signs posted throughout practice sites and facilities and also educating staff.
