Juwan Howard’s 5-year contract worth over $11 million

The contract details for Michigan’s new men’s basketball coach Juwan Howard have been released.

This week, Angelique Chengelis of The Detroit News reported that Howard’s contract is a five-year deal that will be worth $11.2 million, which caps at a $2.5 million salary in the fifth year of his contract. He will be paid $2 million for the 2019-20 season, his first year in Ann Arbor.

Here’s how Howard’s salary breaks down by year:

• Year 1 (2019-20) — $2 million
• Year 2 (2020-21) — $2.1 million
• Year 3 (2021-22) — $2.2 million
• Year 4 (2022-23) — $2.4 million
• Year 5 (2023-24) — $2.5 million

Howard’ contract also includes a buyout provision that starts at $5 million for the first year and drops by $1 million each of the following four years if he is terminated without cause before the end of his deal. If Howard leaves before the contract expires, he will owe Michigan half of the buyout amount.

Contract deals for Howard’s three assistant coaches were also released. Phil Martelli will earn $450,000, Howard Eisley will be paid $375,000 and Saddi Washington will receive $330,000.
