Toledo native Jase Bowen had a Kyler Murray-like decision to make after being drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 11th round of the MLB Draft earlier this month. Either sign the contract and pursue a career in professional baseball or stay committed to Michigan State football and be a two-sport athlete in East Lansing.

Bowen decided to pursue pro baseball.

On Wednesday, the Michigan State wide receiver who was committed in the 2019 class, announced that he’ll be playing professional baseball rather than joining the Spartans. He made his decision public via Twitter.

“Michigan State will always hold a special place in my heart, but today a childhood dream of mine came true,” Bowen wrote. “I officially signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates to begin my professional baseball career. Couldn’t think of a better first job. Go Bucs.”

Bowen was a three-star member of Michigan State’s 2019 recruiting class and was ranked as the No. 79 receiver in the cycle. He was also listed as a top 25 player out of the state of Ohio.

The Spartans will have to do without, though, as Bowen will be working towards the MLB.

According to the Detroit Free Press, Michigan State is still waiting to hear from Adam Berghorst, another commit in the Spartans’ 2019 class who was selected in the MLB Draft. Berghorst was taken in the 14th round by the Texas Rangers.

Berghorst is a three-star defensive end out of Zeeland, Michigan. He is expected to play baseball and football at Michigan State, should he stay committed.
