Robbie Hummel, USA 3×3 basketball team wins World Cup Gold Medal

Former Purdue basketball star Robbie Hummel is a world champion.

On Sunday, Team USA claimed the first men’s FIBA 3×3 World Cup title, defeating Latvia 18-14. The squad went a perfect 7-0 throughout the week to win the gold medal in Amsterdam. The championship victory means Team USA has locked up a berth in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament, scheduled for spring 2020.

The 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo will mark the first time 3×3 basketball has been played.

Hummel was one of the members of the team, along with Canyon Barry, Damon Huffman and Kareem Maddox. The former Purdue forward scored a team-high 46 points through seven games, good enough for third-highest in the entire tournament.

For his efforts in the gold medal performance, Hummel was named World Cup Most Valuable Player.

To win the gold medal Team USA defeated Serbia, Poland, Turkey, South Korea, Netherlands, Slovenia and Latvia.

“It’s a heck of a feeling,” Hummel said, according to TeamUSA.org after winning the title. “I’m so proud of our team.”

Hummel was a three-time All-B1G selection during his career at Purdue (2007-2012). He was a two-time All-American honorable mention and was drafted in the second round of the 2012 NBA Draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves.
