Former Ohio State football player and Toledo native Derjuan Elston-Gambrell was shot and killed on the Fourth of July in his hometown, according to a report from WTOL.
Police reportedly responded to a shooting in central Toledo and found Gambrell suffering from a single gunshot wound to his abdomen. Authorities arrested Timothy Simmons, who called 911 and admitted to shooting Gambrell after and argument.
According to the report, Gambrell was the boyfriend of Simmons’ sister. Simmons was taken into custody and was charged with murder.
Gambrell was a member of Ohio State’s 2011 recruiting class as a three-star cornerback. He redshirted his first season in Columbus but was dismissed from the team by new head coach Urban Meyer for “violation of team rules,” following an arrest, according to the Toledo Blade.
Gambrell was 27 years old.
