Former Clemson and East Carolina running back Tyshon Dye has died at a park in Georgia, according to multiple reports. He was just 25 years old.
Per the Greenville News, Dye drowned on Friday at Lake Russell State Park in Elberton, Georgia while swimming with his brothers. The report says Dye was tiring while in the water and couldn’t make it back to shore.
“All of our hearts are just broken,” Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. I can honestly say Tyshon Dye is one of the sweetest souls I’ve ever been associated with or coached. We’re just all heartbroken tonight, and we’re praying for his family and know that he’s been called home.”
Dye was a member of Clemson’s football team from 2014-16, appearing in 17 career games for the Tigers. He totaled 351 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 76 carries. He played in seven games in 2016 for the Tigers’ national championship team, registering 109 yards on 21 touches.
Following his graduation from Clemson, Dye transferred to East Carolina to complete his college football career. He rushed for 217 yards and added 56 receiving yards in 2017 for the Pirates.
