Count Laura Rutledge as another name who is buying stock in Nebraska’s B1G title hopes in 2019.
The Huskers have earned a lot of hype this offseason. Media outlets are picking Nebraska to be a contender in the West, crack the top 25 and some even projecting it to be a national title contender in Scott Frost’s second season. Rutledge is also a firm believer in the Huskers’ ability to take the next step.
“I think Scott Frost will do a lot to kind of launch Nebraska back into the national conversation,” Rutledge said during Thursday’s Get Up!. “Remember what we saw him do at UCF with that offense? It was so much fun to watch. He’s got a dual-threat quarterback and I think when people are looking for these new offensive minds, the trend right now in the NFL, he will be a name that you hear a lot.”
Adrian Martinez is a big reason why so many are believing in Nebraska’s 2019 chances to win the B1G. Rutledge thinks the sophomore could be a serious contender for the Heisman Trophy.
“Scott Frost is very excited about this young man,” Rutledge said. “He has an incredible dual-threat skill set, which we saw on display at times last season. But this year, all the hype of course is on Nebraska for good reason. I think he’s poised for a breakout season where we’ll be talking about him a lot.
“He also brings an extra level of intangible qualities to the table. I just saw him at Big Ten Media Days and he had just bought a new suit. He looks the part and says all the right things. So, I’m a big fan of his. I think Adrian could be in New York (at the Heisman ceremony).”
Nebraska is coming off a 4-8 campaign, but the Huskers are poised to make a big leap in 2019. We’ll see if it’s similar to the jump UCF made from Year 1 to Year 2 under Frost.
