A verbal agreement of commitment only means so much.

Sure, there are men that say they are a man of their word, but, how much does that really mean? For high school athletes trying to choose what college to further their careers at, a verbal commitment isn’t exactly the be-all end-all.

On Saturday night, that was proven once again. Sofian Massoud, the first ever recruit to verbally pledge to Rutgers for the Class of 2020, decommitted from the Scarlet Knights and is joining the Houston Cougars:

It should be noted — as he wrote in his tweet — that Houston is his mother’s alma mater. Is that the only reason for Massoud’s decommitment? Maybe.

It was also rumored that Massoud could be made a safety at Rutgers as opposed to QB. Since Massoud’s commitment, the Scarlet Knights have also gotten a commitment from 2020 QB Evan Simon — a 3-star prospect and the team’s highest-rated recruit for that class.

Massoud, a 3-star prospect, is also from Houston. In short, this change of mind shouldn’t come as an otherworldly shock.

Rutgers’ 2020 class is now eight members deep and ranks 13th in the Big Ten.
