Le’Veon Bell is getting ready to return to action after sitting out all of the 2018 NFL season, and he had a message for fantasy owners on Thursday.
The former Michigan State star made headlines last year when he held out for a long-term contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers. With both sides unable to come to an agreement, Bell stood firm in his hold out and sat out the entire season.
It was a risky decision for Bell, but he is now with the New York Jets after signing a four-year deal. Bell is also aware he cost the fantasy owners that drafted him before the 2018 season with his season-long holdout.
After apologizing for costing the fantasy teams that drafted him in 2018, Bell seemed confident he will not be costing teams anything in 2019. According to Michael David Smith with Pro Football Talk, Bell told reporters owners should draft him “First” this time around:
“As long as this offense does what this offense is going to do, I think anybody could be a No. 1 fantasy guy,” he said. “We’ve got so much talent.”
Bell also clarified that he did not regret his decision to sit out last year. His regret was simply not being able to notify fantasy owners that he would not be playing:
“I don’t regret sitting out last year, but I wish I could have told fantasy owners some type of way, ‘I’m not playing this year,’ so they wouldn’t have picked me,” Bell said. “That’s the thing I’m apologizing for, a lot of people picked me not even knowing if I was coming back. That’s what I was really sorry about, not because I sat out, but not being able to communicate that to fantasy owners, that I’m not playing. A lot of people feel like they wasted their money. So, I’m sorry again.”
