Each season, bigger schools schedule smaller schools to play against in the non-conference portion of their schedules.
Some schools do it different and schedule tougher opponents, but regardless, there are almost always “cupcake” games involved. For the 2019 season, Ohio State is playing Florida Atlantic, Cincinnati and Miami University in its three non-conference games.
What is the advantage of these schools playing a team like Ohio State? The paycheck. These schools typically bring in a lot of money, and this year is no different.
Florida Atlantic is getting paid $1.4 million in the opener, while Cincinnati is getting $375,000 in the matchup on Sept. 7. Miami University will bring in $1.3 million for the game on Sept. 21.
The total is $3.075 million. That is a lot of money to be paid out. All three of the games, it should be noted, are at Ohio Stadium.
