Urban Meyer on players skipping bowl games: ‘I hate to say this, but I certainly understand it’

Bowl games are exhibition games.

Surely, some mean more than others (especially in the College Football Playoff). But, if you’re not a part of the four-team playoff, it is truly just another game.

Players over the last few years have started to take bowl games to not mean as much as they used to. Are they right? That’s up to you to decide.

When a player has a potential multi-million dollar contract waiting for them in the NFL, is playing in the Cotton Bowl really worth it?

Jim Harbaugh talked about the topic earlier this week and said that skipping bowl games not only hurts the game of college football, but that it hurts the player’s legacy, too.

On Thursday afternoon, former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer joined Colin Cowherd on his show, The Herd and was asked about the topic:

Meyer seems to have the same thoughts as Harbaugh. He may not be as outwardly passionate about it as Harbaugh seemed to be, but Meyer did say that he worries about the newer trend “big time.”

Meyer also said that he gets the big picture as well. As mentioned above, if millions of dollars are at stake, what does one bowl game truly mean to a player that could be risking it all?

What are your thoughts on players skipping out on these postseason exhibitions?
