The past three years have been a bit of a rollercoaster for Ohio State receiver Austin Mack. Due to a combination of an extremely deep position group and injury issues, the Fort Wayne, Indiana native hasn’t made quite the impact he’s hoped to make.

Mack has been a consistent contributor the last two seasons, totaling 50 receptions for 674 yards and three touchdowns. Those aren’t terrible numbers by any means, but he hasn’t been a consistent target in the Buckeye offense just yet.

He was making a splash last year, but a midseason injury kept him sidelined of the final six games of the season. Mack recorded 26 catches for 343 yards and a touchdown in eight games. And since that time, he’s been on and off the field trying to recover for the upcoming season.

Mack has been doing drills on the sideline recently, hoping to get back to practice soon. Ryan Day says he expects the senior receiver to be returning by next week, according to Bill Rabinowitz of the Columbus Dispatch.

Ohio State still has a ton of depth at receiver with K.J. Hill, Binjimen Victor, Chris Olave, C.J. Saunders and several others. But Mack’s three years of experience would be a nice addition to the roster.

Mack could also be a solid target in the passing attack for the Buckeyes this fall.

In three seasons, Mack has appeared in 34 career games. He’s totaled 52 catches for 689 yards and three touchdowns. The Buckeyes open the season against Florida Atlantic on Aug. 31.
