Big news came out of Miami on Monday, as the program announced that redshirt freshman Jarren Williams was named the starting quarterback, beating out Tate Martell and N’Kosi Perry for the job.
The announcement came as a surprise, as many expected Martell to run away with the job. But Williams beat out two solid players for the job, earning some serious respect from head coach Manny Diaz.
On Twitter, Diaz congratulated his new starter after winning the job in camp. It’s a move you don’t often see coaches make. College football analyst Kirk Herbstreit was a big fan of Diaz’s approach.

“Like this approach,” Herbstreit wrote on Twitter. “In an era where many Head Coaches are worried about the reaction of the other high profile QBs (and their Dads) Manny owns and announces it from the rooftops!! Love this approach.”

It’s become almost custom for players — particularly quarterbacks — to at least test the transfer portal when they lose the job. Some coaches might find announcing the starter publicly on Twitter might push some of those players away, Diaz doesn’t seem to care.
There’s no right way to approach the situation, but Diaz has received the stamp of approval from Herbstreit.
