There’s been a lot of excitement around the arrival of four-star wide receiver David Bell on Purdue’s campus. Unfortunately, there’s still a lot of unknowns about the newcomer.

It’s no fault of Bell’s, either. The Indianapolis native sustained a hamstring injury in July that has kept him off the field for a majority of Purdue’s camp. Now, with the season opener less than two weeks away and still not at full strength, he’s got a lot of work to do in a short amount of time.

Head coach Jeff Brohm is still excited about the potential the kid brings to the field, though.

Brohm was on the Query and Schultz Show on Tuesday, which was live from West Lafayette. That’s when the head coach offered some of his thoughts on Bell.

“We’re definitely excited about David,” Brohm said. “I think he’ll absolutely be a playmaker. Unfortunately, early July he hurt the hamstring and it’s been a long process. This next week and a half will be vital to see where he’s at.”

Bell, who was ranked as the No. 19 wide receiver in the 2019 class and No. 113 overall, is expected to be Rondale Moore’s running mate in the passing attack. Both have excellent speed and elusiveness, making it hard for defenders to bring them to the ground.

With the injury, though, it’s obviously hampered Bell’s ability to master the offense and show off his playmaking ability in camp. Brohm is hoping the freshman will be able to pick things up quickly.

Purdue will open the season on Friday, Aug. 30 against Nevada.
