Lovie Smith already has big plans for incoming transfer Derrick Smith.

Derrick Smith chose to transfer from Miami earlier this summer, and he recently settled on the Illini for his next destination. Smith served as a defensive back with the Hurricanes and recorded 24 tackles over parts of two seasons.

Lovie Smith discussed the addition of the experienced defender during his Monday press conference, and he indicated the former DB will transition to a new role at Illinois. According to Issac Trotter with Illini Inquirer, Lovie indicated Derrick will transition to a linebacker slot for 2020:

“Good football player that we know,” said Lovie. “Once you get a chance to see him, that’s another addition. That process will continue. First, it’s what we’re looking for at the linebacker position. Game is transitioning to guys who can play in space. Players with a defensive back background that have gotten a bit bigger. He fit the profile. Skilled outside linebacker.”

Derrick Smith will sit out 2019 after transferring. Hopefully, he is ready to roll with his new position heading into next season.
