The Blackshirt tradition is one of the best in college football. For former Nebraska defenders, it’s something they consider to be one of the most special things in their life.

That’s especially true for former Nebraska linebacker Jay Foreman, a Husker defender in the mid-1990s. In fact, the Blackshirt is so special to him, he has a plan for his jersey.

Earlier this week, Scott Frost had former Nebraska players who earned a Blackshirt a chance to speak with the current team. They got the chance to tell current Huskers the importance of earning that honor, and bringing back the glory of the Nebraska defense.

It’s when players learned just how important that Blackshirt jersey is to Foreman.

“Their message to the team was spot on,” Frost said during his Monday news conference. “It was an inspiring and neat to see that happen after practice… Jay Foreman was one of the neatest ones to me. He said there’s only two jerseys in his office: his first Husker jersey and his Blackshirt.

“Actually, in his will, he said he’s going to be buried with his Blackshirt. So if anything tells you what it means to those guys, his message told us that.”

Yeah, I guess you could say that Blackshirt is important.

Frost has talked about Nebraska getting back to playing a tough, physical brand of football. He wants to beat up on teams on regular basis, and make teams “feel it” when they go up against the Huskers. A big part of that is getting the defense to play much tougher moving forward.

We’ll see if the message from those former Blackshirt players gets through.
