Joel Klatt had a lot to say when discussing the strength of the various conferences.

In a segment with the BTN, Klatt broke down how he feels about the B1G. To his credit, he did praise the B1G for being the deepest conference in college football. In particular, the parity in the B1G West and some strong teams in the East are what set the conference apart.

However, Klatt also admitted there are some issues when it comes to the perception of a strong conference. Though the B1G has been a tough conference to win, it has not produced a national champion in a while:

“But, unfortunately for the B1G,” said Klatt, “We really rate the perception of conference strength rests at the top…being great through the middle just makes it really hard to get to the Playoff.”

Klatt didn’t stop there. He went on to say that the SEC really isn’t a deep conference, but the strength of Georgia and Alabama has driven the perception of the conference. In order for the B1G to earn that type of recognition, someone needs to step up and compete in the Playoff:

“I don’t think the SEC is all that deep,” Klatt Explained. “But they’ve ridden the coattails of the Georgia’s and the Alabama’s to the perception that this conference top to bottom is so strong. Well, now the B1G is in need of that. They need some coattails to ride at some point. They need one of these teams to rise up, win a Playoff game, compete for and possibly win a national championship.”

Will this be the year a B1G team returns to the Playoff?
