Rutgers is off to a terrible start against UMass

Rutgers hadn’t even played a quarter of football in the 2019 season, and already people are calling for Chris Ash to be fired.
A 15-point favorite over UMass in the season opener, the Scarlet Knights surrendered a game-opening touchdown drive to the Minutemen, trailing 7-0 early. UMass converted two fourth down tries in order to reach the end zone on their initial drive.
It was a 12-play, 75-yard scoring drive for the Minutemen.
On Rutgers’ first offensive possession, quarterback McLane Carter threw an interception, giving UMass the football in Scarlet Knights territory. Two plays later, Cam Roberson bolted 39 yards to the end zone to give the Minutemen a 14-0 advantage.

The clock hadn’t even reached the midway point of the first quarter before Rutgers found itself trailing by two touchdowns.
Rutgers was able to answer with a touchdown run from Isaih Pacheco, cutting the lead to 14-7 in the first quarter. But still, it’s been a rough start for the Knights.
It’s still early in Piscataway, but UMass is a bad Group of Five team and was a two-touchdown underdog to Rutgers. If the Scarlet Knights can’t find a way to win this game, they’re going to struggle to find any wins this season.
