Normally only footballs soar through the Ann Arbor sky at Michigan Stadium. This past Saturday, a drone was flying too.
University of Michigan police arrested two people for flying a drone at the Michigan football home opener against Middle Tennessee State according to The Detroit News. It is illegal to fly drones anywhere on the Michigan campus.
But it’s illegal to fly a drone at Michigan Stadium for another reason. According to University of Michigan deputy chief of police Melissa Overton, drones can not be flown within a five-mile radius of an airport because of FAA regulations. The Ann Arbor Airport falls within that distance from where the drone was found Saturday night.
“We made contact with the drone pilots that night and made two arrests,” Overton said according to The Detroit News.
“There’s a lot to it,” she added. “We’re going to continue following up on all our leads and do everything we can do.”
The University of Michigan police are still investigating. The Michigan Department of Public Safety and Security released a statement on Aug. 29 saying that on Friday’s before home games this season “people at or near Michigan Stadium may see a drone flying overhead” but then added “no drone activity will occur” on game days.
While that drone was flying around, Michigan defeated Middle Tennessee State, 40-21. The Wolverines will play their next home game this Saturday against Army at 12 ET.
