Former Minnesota head coach and Rutgers offensive coordinator Jerry Kill will return to coaching after a season away from the game. Virginia Tech has hired Kill to join its coaching staff as a special assistant to the head coach.

“Jerry Kill will serve as a tremendous resource for our football program,” Virginia Tech head coach Justin Fuente said according to HokieSports.com. “Coach Kill possesses over three decades of expertise and will be great addition to our staff. In addition to over 20 years of experience as collegiate and high school head coach, he’s served as a coordinator on both sides of the ball. He can dissect the game from virtually every angle and will be able to provide his unique perspective on everything from recruiting, to personnel and facilities.

Kill served as Minnesota’s head coach from 2011-15, posting a 29-29 record. He and the Golden Gophers began the 2015 season with a 4-3 record, but Kill was forced to retire midseason because of health problems.

After a year away from coaching, Kill returned to the Big Ten as Rutgers’ offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2017. He spent one season in that role before becoming the athletic director and special assistant to the chancellor at Southern Illinois last year.

Kill also coached at Southern Illinois from 2001-07. Following that stint, he departed for Northern Illinois and served as head coach there from 2008-10.

At the FBS level, Kill owns a 52-45 record as a head coach.
