Final score: Boston College 30 Rutgers 16

Brief recap: Rutgers hung with Boston College for much of the game, staying within one possession for much of the contest. The Scarlet Knights had their chances to finish the non-conference schedule 2-1, but a healthy dose of AJ Dillon and too many costly mistakes was too much to overcome. Marred by penalties and turnovers, the Scarlet Knights got worn down in the fourth quarter and couldn’t slow down Boston College’s rushing attack. It ended up costing the Scarlet Knights a win.

Key moment: Boston College’s final touchdown drive to take a 30-16 lead with 6:32 to play in the fourth quarter was really the defining moment. Rutgers was trailing by just one possession and could’ve had an opportunity to tie the game if they cam up with a stop. Instead, BC trudged down the field for 18 plays and 75 yards, taking more than 6:30 off the clock to put the game out of reach.

Key stat: 11 penalties for 100 yards just isn’t going to cut it for Rutgers. When you’re a team overmatched in the talent department, you’ve got to play a pretty clean game to get a win. Saturday’s performance was anything but. Two turnovers were just killer, too.

Key player: Dillon was the bell cow for Boston College’s offense, ripping up the Scarlet Knights defense for 150 yards and two touchdowns on 32 carries. He never had a big break away run — his longest of the day was 15 yards — but he steadily wore down Rutgers defense.

What it means: Life doesn’t get any easier for Rutgers, with the number of winnable games dwindling on the schedule. After Boston College’s loss to Kansas last week, this looked like a must-win game for the Scarlet Knights. Instead, they fumbled it away. It would’ve been one thing if this team was completely overmatched, but when 11 penalties and a few turnovers cost you a game, it’s a hard pill to swallow. Rutgers needs to clean this up, and quick, if it hopes to have any success in the B1G.
