Final score: #6 Ohio State 76 Miami (OH) 5
Brief recap: Early in the game, it looked like Miami (OH) came to fight. The RedHawks forced a safety and drove deep into Ohio State territory and converted on a field goal to take a 5-0 lead in the first quarter. That was the extend of Miami’s contention, though. The Buckeyes rolled after that, as its superior talent took over and blew the doors of the in-state MAC foe. Aside from a few early mistake, Ohio State was pretty much flawless again. There’s really not much else to say after a game like this.
Key moment: Jeff Okudah’s early interception with the Buckeyes leading 14-5 seems like as good of a moment as any. After the pick, Ohio State’s offense trotted onto the field and scored three plays later to take a 21-5 advantage. That pretty well took the wind out of the sails of the RedHawks.
Key stat: Ohio State’s defense held Miami to just 4-of-17 of 3rd down conversions. There were plenty of other stats that could’ve been used, but this seemed pretty relevant.
Key player: Let’s mix this one up a bit, and go with Chris Chugunov. The backup quarterback stepped up after the game had been decided and completed 6-of-7 pass attempts for 86 yards and two touchdowns. He deserves some credit for leading the Buckeyes to the end zone on a few drives.
What it means: Is there anything we learned from this blowout? Honestly? Ohio State has been far superior to everyone it has played thus far into the season. We know Ohio State’s offense is explosive and the defense is the real deal. We’re about to learn a lot more when the Buckeyes start battling some better competition.
