Opposing teams better account for Jonathan Sutherland when he’s on the field.

The junior defensive back for the Nittany Lions has developed into a key member of Penn State’s strong special teams unit. Sutherland has made a habit of getting in on the action, and he is tied for the national lead in a crucial category.

According to CFBStats.com, Sutherland is tied for the lead in blocked kicks/punts entering Week 5 with two on the season. Only two other players in the country have blocked multiple kicks to this point with Sutherland being the only B1G player with multiple blocks so far.

Specials teams can sometimes be an overlooked aspect of a gameplan, but there is no denying how crucial they can be. A blocked kick can change momentum in an instant. Having Sutherland all the field makes that a big advantage for the Nittany Lions.

Hopefully, Sutherland can come up with another key play in Friday’s B1G opener against Maryland. Kickoff against the Terrapins is set for 8 pm EST on FS1.
