It started as a joking way to make some extra cash for beer, but Carson King’s GameDay ‘Beer Money’ sign has turned into one of the best viral stories of the year.
King, a 24-year-old Iowa State fan, made a sign asking for beer money and brought it to ESPN’s College GameDay in Ames two weeks ago. Once the sign appeared on TV, King started receiving money on his Venmo account, which was displayed on the sign.
The beer money donations began rolling in. Once the amount reached $600, King decided to donate it to the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital.
The total is now way more than $600. King’s ‘Beer Money’ sign has generated a whopping $2 million for the Children’s Hospital.

Deservingly so, King has received all kinds of accolades for his efforts to raise money for the hospital that’s located right next to his team’s rival’s, the Iowa Hawkeyes, stadium. Anheuser-Busch and Venmo each gave King an award, and Iowa invited him to attend Saturday’s game against Middle Tennessee, so he can participate in Iowa’s tradition of the wave to the Children’s Hospital, where all of his donations will be going.
