After a 1-3 start to the 2019 season, Rutgers has decided to fire head football coach Chris Ash, according to multiple reports. NJ.com’s Keith Sargent was first to report the news on Sunday.
Per Sargent, Ash and offensive coordinator John McNulty have both been terminated. Nunzio Campanile, the team’s tight ends coach, will take over as the interim head coach for the next eight games, according to the report.
“We appreciated Chris’s dedicated efforts on behalf of our football program, our department and our university,” Rutgers Director of Athletics Pat Hobbs told NJ.com.
Ash was in his fourth season with the Scarlet Knights. Rutgers is coming off a 52-0 loss to Michigan on Saturday and is 1-3 on the year with an 0-2 start in B1G play. Rutgers was defeated 30-0 by Iowa in Week 2.
Ash is 8-32 during his time in Piscataway with a 3-26 record against B1G opponents. His best season came in 2018, finishing 4-8 with three B1G wins. In 2016 and 2018, the Scarlet Knights failed to win a B1G game.
Last season, Rutgers finished 1-11 and 0-9 in the B1G.
McNulty was in his second season as the offensive coordinator. He was the first OC in the last decade to return for a second season in Piscataway.
Rutgers’ next opponent is Maryland.
