Improving to 5-0 on the season, the No. 12 Penn State Nittany Lions had no problems with the Purdue Boilermakers on Saturday at Beaver Stadium, winning 35-7.

Recovering a fumble and piling up 10 sacks, the Nittany Lion defense was flying around all afternoon. The 10 sacks are one shy of the program record – set vs. Illinois in 1999.

Speaking to the media postgame, head coach James Franklin was very proud of his defense’s performance, junior Shaka Toney in particular.

Via Audrey Snyder of The Athletic CFB:

Leading the charge with three sacks vs. the Boilermakers, Toney now has five sacks in 2019. Redshirt junior Yetur Gross-Matos added two sacks.

Registering just 104 total yards, Purdue’s offensive attack could not get anything going sans redshirt senior quarterback Elijah Sindelar. Starting in Sindelar’s place, redshirt freshman Jack Plummer completed 13-27 passes for 119 yards and a touchdown.

Looking like a threat in the B1G East, Penn State travels to Iowa City for a date with the No. 14 Hawkeyes (4-1) on October 12.

Falling to 1-4, Saturday was Purdue’s third consecutive loss. Jeff Brohm’s team will look to right the ship when they host Maryland (3-2) on Saturday (12:00PM ET, BTN).
