Don Brown is officially on board.

The Wolverines officially welcomed their new defensive coordinator on Monday after reports surfaced on Sunday night that he was leaving Boston College for Michigan.

Brown led the nation’s top-ranked unit at Boston College, which speaks for itself. Over 34 years of experience surely made him stand out, as well.

Still, Jim Harbaugh did his due diligence on Brown. The Michigan coach said that he contacted Jack Harbaugh, John Harbaugh, Bill Belichick, Bob Sutton, Vic Fangio and others and they all had rave reviews about Brown.

“Everything he has touched has turned to gold,” Harbaugh said about Brown in an official release. “Just look at his track record as a head coach, defensive coordinator and even as a baseball coach. We are beyond excited to welcome this high character, high achieving individual to our program and university. Teaching and player development are synonymous with coaching and Don Brown epitomizes those qualities.”

Harbaugh wasn’t exaggerating.

Brown was named the 2015 AFCA Assistant Coach of the Year after leading BC to the national lead in eight defensive categories. He has 12 years experience as a head coach and 21 as a defensive coordinator at various stops in the Northeast. As Harbaugh said, Brown was even the interim baseball coach at Yale in 1992.

He’ll take over the position left by D.J. Durkin, who left Michigan after one season to take the head job at Maryland.

Greg Mattison is still expected to serve as defensive coordinator for the Citrus Bowl against Florida on New Year’s Day.
