Michigan 2020 QB commit forced to medically retire from football

Michigan Wolverines 2020 three-star quarterback commit JD Johnson announced his medical retirement from football on Wednesday.

Pinnacle QB and Michigan commit JD Johnson has announced that he will be medically retiring from football due to an aortic coarctation (narrowing of the aorta) that doctors do not believe can be safely repaired, and believe makes continued participation in contact sports unsafe.

As the above Tweet notes, Johnson is a product of Pinnacle High School in Phoenix, Arizona, the same school that Michigan State redshirt senior quarterback Brian Lewerke graduated from.

Committing to Michigan shortly before Christmas last year, Johnson was considered one of the top-20 pro-style quarterbacks in the cycle.
Sans Johnson, the Wolverines’ 2020 class now stands at 23 members – and without a quarterback commit. Headlined by Lincoln-Way East (Frankfort, Illinois) four-star wide receiver A.J. Henning, Michigan’s class ranks No. 9 nationally and No. 2 in the B1G.
Coming off a 31-point victory over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, the Wolverines will travel to College Park to face the Maryland Terrapins (3-5) on Saturday at 12:00PM ET on ABC.
