Willie Taggart out at FSU: ‘We had no choice,’ says FSU president

Willie Taggart will not get a third season to try and turn things around at Florida State.

Taggart was hired to fill the void left by Jimbo Fisher following the 2017 season. He was coming off of one season at Oregon after turning around South Florida from 2013-16.

Unfortunately, it was not a good stay for Taggart with the Seminoles. They missed a bowl game with a 5-7 record in his first year and fell to 4-5 this season with a loss to Miami over the weekend. Making matters worse, Florida State was thoroughly dominated in the 27-10 loss to the Hurricanes

On Sunday, Florida State made the move to terminate Taggart’s contract. Taggart finishes with a 9-12 mark and is the first FSU coach to finish with a losing record since Darrell Mudra in 1974-75. The Seminoles were 4-18 during Mudra’s tenure.

Matt Murschel with the Orlando Sentinel shared a statement from FSU President John Thrasher where he cited FSU “had no choice” to make a change:
